Media Forms: How does the trailer use media language to establish the film's genre?

The trailer uses media language to establish the films genre, which is of a crime thriller genre. Certain aspects of the trailer determine the genre to be a thriller. Firstly the use of darkness /night in the beginning helps to establish something very evil or sinister about its surroundings, which is conventional in a crime thriller. The use of non Diegetic sound in the frame helps to create a certain eerie or nervous atmosphere, by having a beating heart heard in the background adds to the genre being something which will affect audiences or the characters heartbeat, this case being crime. Slow serious music is also added in the back ground to connote either the child’s innocence or respect for deaths which may occur, as the genre is crime. The slow music in the beginning takes a change in the second half of this trailer, where the tempo alters and is much quicker paced, which could be in correlation to the film getting more dilemma packed.   Then the audience are introduced to a young girl by herself, the contrast of the young innocent girl in the dark night could raise questions for the audience, like who is she and where are her parents? The use of slow takes in the beginning helps to convey the intensity in the characters emotions, and build up momentum, with a sharp contrast to the fast shots later in the trailer. The use of lighting is also quite low key and dim which connotes that the films genre is likely to consist of something which is evil or bad, like crime. At the end of the trailer, the title of the film is shown with the use of non Diegetic sound being a sound of a gun being fired, which adds to the establishing the films genre being crime .

Media Representations: How is gender represented in the trailer?

In this trailer Women are seen to be represented in a negative way. The trailer represents men to be dominant and have the weapons and can change your life in any way possible, whereas women are seen to be inferior and not in control and is the puppets of men. If they don’t conform to a man’s reasoning they are likely to be some form of chaos, in this case guns and other forms of violence to be used against them. Firstly we see a young female by herself, which adds to the fact that women aren’t as important as men. Also then we see another older woman with a black eye, which raises questions of domestic violence or some other form of fighting, which most may assume to be done by a male, which again adds to the representation of women being inferior and weak. Then we see the girl as a only what we can assume, becoming a child prostitute against her will which again has a negative representation of women, and the fact the man is in a wealthy house, could connote them to be represented in power as well as likely to be rich. Also the fact the girl has no say in it, again connotes that women have no right in relation to men's values or rights. Both men have the power and are determined to find the females, which suggest the representation of men to be somewhat hunter like, as if women are his prey and them being the predators. One of the men's is shown to be in good clothes which add to the male’s representation to be wealthy and in control and power. So overall women are represented in negative way by them being lower than men in control, status and financially.

The film London to Brighton consists of various ways which make it typical of a low budget British film. Firstly the trailer includes well known celebrities but upcoming or unknown ones. Secondly the director himself actually well knows either and has all done small productions too. In the actual trailer text saying how the film is like another film don’t come up, which suggest this film is completely unique. The use of no CGi or any other technical computer apparatus is used to create anything for the trailer/film. Also the only reviews which the trailer has gotten are from newspapers and magazines, which also make it an unbiased review for films, as the newspapers and magazines have nothing to relate it back to, as the directors and characters both haven’t worked in any other films before.Also the use of no famous music,such as bands or singers are used,as the film would have had to gained permission and to do this it involves alot of money,which they don't have.

The trailer promotes the film to its target audiences by a use of various techniques .The target audience for this film is 16+ males and females,as both genders can relate to this film. The trailer uses sentimental value,including a innocent child getting involved in prostitution which may startle audiences enough to watch the film. Also another way the trailer promotes the film is with the sudden and dramatic use of music ,which also adds to the pace of the film to quicken ,as the music increases ,which adds drama to the dilemma,hence engaging readers.
