Magazine Front covers Analysis

Two Contrasting Magazines Covers:

Elle magazine cover:

The Elle magazine carry a variety of codes, such as Technical, Symbolic and written, which help to produce a well rounded magazine. The technical code in this case is the camera angles used. The central celebrity is Kristen Stewart and shoes a long shot, which could be because they want to show what she is wearing as it may be the latest fashion. Moreover there is only one image, which is her, which suggests that the magazine is just focusing mainly on her. Also the idea of the long shot could also be to show the hair, which maybe be referred back to in the magazine. The long shot also helps the reader determine her body shape as well (slim/curvy).

The symbolic code of the magazine cover is that her expression firstly is quite neutral with a quaint smile, suggesting she may know a secret, and that if you purchase the magazine she may reveal it. Also her eyebrow is slightly raised suggesting that she may be questioning something in her life etc. Her body language suggests her to be an independent woman, and to have a dominant persona, as her hands behind her back, which may connote she doesn’t need a helping hand from anyone.

Her body language seems kind of closed up, as only the other half is displayed ,connoting that her other half of her personality may be hidden ,but about to be revealed. Her clothes are very formal, suggesting that her life may be very busy and business based, as her clothes ideal for work. The colour of her clothes are very neutral, white and dull brown suggesting to been seen in a positive light and that she is pure/innocent, but can get "dirty" (as in she can get involved in something which may be frowned upon) if she wants to with the notion of wearing brown. Her makeup is also very light meaning she may be natural, however the bracelet and jewellery that she is wearing all have a background colour of goldish ,suggesting she is to been seen as important (royalty). The gaze of Kristen Stewart is right on the readers gaze, which is eye-catching to readers.

The written codes of this magazine cover involve the text shown. The main masthead "Elle" is in the colour pink, suggesting that the edition is likely to be girly and feminine .Also it adds a contrast to the colour Kristen Stewart is wearing, grabbing the reader’s attention. Moreover it seems that the words which are likely to appeal to women such as "body issues" and "hey sexy" are in pink, which appeals to the target audience. The rest of the words are shown in black, maybe in relation to the cover girl, Kristen Stewart. The colour used could be to offset her persona. The black could represent her rock chick/Goth side and the pink her girly side. In addition the text holds a variety of bold/thin formatting indicating the most important headings in correlation to the other ones.

Rolling Stones Magazine Cover

Similar toThe Elle magazine in carrying a variety of codes, such as Technical, Symbolic and written, Rolling stones contrasts Elle magazine in the the target audeince and other aspects. The target audience of this magazine is mostly a wide variety of men.The technical code in this case is the camera angles used ,which is a long shot, which is enticing for men as they get a whole view of Katy Perry's body. Moreover there is only one image which suggest she is in control and that the focus is on her .The long shot also is benefical for showing her body frame and her hair etc, which may appeal to men in some way.

The symbolic code of the magazine cover is that her expression firstly is troubled and slightly sexy, this appeals to men and connotes that she may been seen as a Damsel in Distress, which makes men seem to be the Knight in Shining Armour.
The pink bra and underwear she is wearing could connote her girly side and how feminine she is.Moreover the pink could connote her as being a baby, and she needs love and care, which may appeal to a man.Her hair is shown to be slightly bed head/curly which coulds signfy that she is lazy and is a party girl. Her skin is shown to be matte, with a slight shimmer suggesting she takes care of herself. Her pose is one of her legs is closed but one of them is slightly open. This could infer that she may be open to relation .

The written codes of this magazine cover involve the text shown to in a simplistic font that it can be easily read by anyone of the target audience. The main headline is in bold black font "Sex,God and Katy Perry",which symbolises her to be in the same category  of |God . The black colour connotes her to be sinister or a notion of her being  a " fallen angel".The white words contrast with the black, and could also connote the names written to be either legends, with the connotaions of them being pure.

Different Genres: Audience profiles

Three Different Movie Posters:

Saw Movie Poster:

Audience Profile
This Movie poster is of Saw,and its genre is horror. The age would be probably teenagers,(12-23),as youths are more likely to love the suspense. The gender is sterotypically to be males,as they are more prone to liking scary films more than women. The ethinicty of people who are likely to view this film is a mainly white as the hand on the poster is white. However this does not mean that they are the only ethnicity who will see this,a mixture may such as ;Black etc.The socio-economic class of this poster is likely to be D or E,as students are likely to go watch this film ,and other skilled/working class. The Young and Rubicam's psychographic profiles in this case would be Explorers ,as they want to escape from real life, and attempt to have adventure, therefore would like to watch a horror movie.

The poster uses a white background denoting a bathroom or kitchen perhaps, and the connotations of a kitchen could be a butchers/Knife ,symbolising death (stabbing). The main image of the hand interpellates the audience to wonder how the hand got there, and most importantly whoms is it.Moreover the hand is been broken off and is all dirty/blood ridden, connoting the that there will be death and blood involed in the movie.Futhermore, the fact that the hand is towards us ,could suggest that it wants to drag us or take us in the movie. The actual text itself shows a burnt reddish/black color connoting blood and mabye its been there for awhile thats why the colour has deepend. This could indiacte the movie may go on for a few movies.

Wedding Crashers Movie Poster:

Audience Profile
The movie poster is wedding Crashers and the genre is comedy. The age profile of this film is likely to be teenagers,(13-24) as they will be interested these comical aspects of the movie. The gender is likely to be both ,male and female as it relates to both audiences, however appealing a bit more to men,as there are two men can be seen.Ethnicty is mainly involving white as there are two white men on the poster. The socioeconmic class is likely to be class B,C2,D as weddings can be expenisve so you have to be working to have one,so they must be working. The Young and Rubicam's psychographic profiles in this case would be Aspirer,as they are would be interested in image, appearance, charisma, persona and fashion, aspects involving weddings.

The main image shows Two men ,one is shown to be standing staright ,which could infer he is likely to be the sensible one,in contrast to the latter one whom is in a "party" postion. The background is white ,which could suggest a notion of purity or innocence coming through the movie. The names of the actors are in black which could indiacte that the characters are likely to be sinster perhaps or have a dark side. The texts "hide your bridesmaids." in red could connote danger and alarm, making it seem like a major issue. The full stop adds emphasis on tha matter. The two characters are wearing primary colours, suggesting their persona may be childlike as well as contrasting making them friends.

Alice In Wonderland:

Audience Profile
The movie poster is of Alice in Wonderland and the genre of it is Fantasy. The age group of this film is (5-11),as it is a childrens film. The gender is mostly going to be females as the main protagonist is female and white ,making the ethinicty to be mainly white due to the girl on the poster to be white. The socieconomic class is likely to be B,C2,D etc. as the parents are obviously going to have children and this typically means they will have to be working in order to provide for their children. The Young and Rubicam's psychographic profiles in this case would be Explorer,as this film is a fantasy/adventure realting to the aspects of an Explorer.

The colours involved in this are seen as being very bright ,in reference to young children works well in promoting the movie to children. The colours include Red,Pink which are very femenine colours ,appealing to young girls more.Images of Roses and other nature things such as rabbits and tree conveys that the movie is likely to have a notion of nature and being outside. The dress Alice is wearing is Blue which may suggest her to a calm/soft character. The images of the trees being slightly towards her could suggest that they are evil or want her for something. They play a contarst to the blueish sky. Moreover the sky in the poster starts off as light blue, but then turns into a grey colour. This could conote that there will be some from of dilemma involved in the situation. The text style seems sort of royal and as it is flicked out it could suggest it was written with a fine pen, symbolising royalty.

Commercials banned by the ASA

IKEA Banned Commercials

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_UOVFqjay0

The link above shows three commericials by IKEA encouraging people to tidy-up. However, their methods are slighty extreme, causing the audience to be alarmed. This resulted in the outcome of them being banned.

In the first commercial, the couple start kissing, however as they lay down on the sofa, a fork left out by the male stabs the female in the back, 'causing her death. This is frowned upon by society as the audience doesn't wish to see death in commercials as although the message gets across, the method used is exaggerated and although humerous, slightly depressing. Furthermore, it contains aspects of sexual notions, which includes kissing etc. This startles parents as they do not want their young ones to mimic what they see in the commercial.

In the second commercial, the couple are eating spaghetti in a sexual manner, proceeding to the couple kissing. However, when the female starts to eat another strand of "spaghetti" sexually, after some time, the audience and her both notice that it's actually a shoelace from the filth-ridden trainers on their side. This disgusts the audience as the thought of eating a filthy shoelace. Also, the sexual notions presented could also alarm parents as it could encourage their young ones to imitate what they see, which may have a negative impact.

In the third commercial, a child is seen innocently playing with his toys, however when reaching the climax of the commercial, the audience notice that one of the toys is not what it was percieved to be, and although it's a toy, it's meant for other uses... This terrifies parents as they do not want their children to see objects such as those shown in this commercial. Another reason why it may have been banned is because it manipulates the innocent nature of a young child, which audience members may find sick.

Overall, all of the above commercials involved extremely high amounts sexual aspects, which gives meaning as to why the ASA banned the commercials. All of the commercials offended the parental community as they would not want their children to see the above contents of the commercials.

Second Advert

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow0a06gsiF4

Volkswagen banned tv commercial Bollocks
This video was banned by the ASA due to its explicit nature ,which includes a young girl aged 4-6 swearing in the correct context which alarms the audience . Moreover as it was on national tv it would have been on most channels, this would influence young children to use the term "bollocks",as they are viewing a particular someone from their target audeince.

Third Advert
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_SscO5tBHo

This Advert caused controversy due to it advertising false information. The woman is wearing false lash inserts, but it hasnt said that she is wearing them in the advert, which is illegal resulting in it being banned.Futhermore it symbolises that her eye lashes are fake, and are due to her mascara but is not really.

Dominant and alternative ideology

Dominant Ideology
James Bond : Quantum of Solace
http://ninsox.com/files/2008/07/james_bond_quantum_of_solace_poster.jpg

This James Bond film shows dominant ideology as the main protagonist is caucasian and male,it is shown as being the sterotypically blond ,blue eyes male.Which many of the audience can relate to. Also, the main protagonist is a hetrosexual. James Bond is middle aged which is the typical aspect of dominant ideology. Moreover, James Bond is illustrated as being an able bodied male,as he is prone to getting in to violence.

The plot shows that the movie is in the genre of thriller /action,which suggest that its more likely to be a dominant movie, consisting of dominant characters. Therefore, this connotes domainace of the film, mostly being sterotypically.

Plot (Copied and pasted from wikipedia)

James Bond  is driving from Lake Como to Siena, Italy with the captured Mr. White After evading pursuers, Bond and M  interrogate White regarding his organization, Quantum. M's bodyguard, Mitchell, a double agent, attacks M, enabling White to escape; Bond chases Mitchell across Siena and kills him.
Bond and M travel search Mitchell's flat and discover he had a contact in Haiti. Bond heads to Haiti to investigate Mitchell's contact, Edmund Slate, and learns that Slate was sent to kill Camille Montes  at the behest of her lover, Dominic Greene, the chairman of an ecological organization called Greene Planet. While observing her meeting with Greene, Bond learns that Greene is helping the Bolivian general Medrano who murdered Camille's family—overthrow his government in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of desert.
After rescuing Camille from Medrano, Bond follows Greene to a performance of Tosca in Austria; en route, CIA agent Gregg Beam  strikes a non-interference deal with Greene to maintain access to Bolivian oil, overruling the objections of Felix Leiter .Bond infiltrates Quantum's meeting at the opera, and a gunfight ensues in the adjoining restaurant. A Special Branch bodyguard of Quantum member Guy Haines, an advisor to the British Prime Minister, is killed, and M, assuming Bond is the killer, has his passports and credit cards revoked. Bond convinces his old ally René Mathis  to accompany him to La Paz. They are greeted by Strawberry Fields (an MI6 field operative from the British Consulate, who demands that Bond return to the UK on the next available flight; nonetheless, Bond soon seduces her before they attend a party Greene holds that night.
At the party, Bond rescues Camille again from Greene. Leaving, Bond and Camille are pulled over by Bolivian police working for Medrano; they had earlier attacked Mathis and put him in the trunk of Bond's car to frame him, and in the ensuing struggle Mathis is killed. Bond and Camille survey Quantum's intended land acquisition in a Douglas DC-3 plane, but are shot down by an Aermacchi SF.260 fighter and a Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter. They parachute out of the burning plane into a sinkhole. In the cave, Bond and Camille discover Quantum is not after oil but is damming Bolivia's supply of fresh water, normally flowing in subterranean rivers, to create a monopoly. Back in La Paz, Bond meets M and learns that Quantum murdered Fields by drowning her naked in crude oil. M orders Bond arrested for disobeying orders but he defies her and escapes.
Bond meets Leiter, who discloses Greene and Medrano will meet at an eco-hotel in the Bolivian desert to finalize the coup; warned by Leiter, he evades American special forces attempting to kill him. At the hotel, Greene and Medrano negotiate their terms. Greene then finally reveals his true plans. By gaining control of the majority of Bolivia's water supply, Greene badgers Medrano into accepting a new contract that makes Greene Planet Bolivia's sole water utility company at significantly higher rates. Bond infiltrates the hotel and executes the chief of police for betraying Mathis, and then confronts Greene. The hotel is destroyed during the battle, but Camille kills Medrano, and Bond captures Greene. After interrogating him about Quantum, Bond leaves Greene stranded in the middle of the desert with only a can of motor oil. Bond and Camille kiss before they part.
Bond goes to Kazan, Russia, where he confronts Vesper Lynd's former lover, Yusef Kabira , who is with Corrine a Canadian agent. Yusef is a member of Quantum who seduces women with valuable connections, such as Vesper. In an act of restraint, Bond decides not to kill Yusef and allows MI6 to arrest him. Outside, M tells Bond that Greene was found in the middle of the desert dead, with motor oil in his stomach, but Bond denies knowing anything. M also reveals that Felix has been promoted and has taken Beam's place. She reinstates Bond as an agent; he tells M that he never left. As he leaves, he drops the necklace Yusef had given Vesper in the snow.

Alternative Ideology
East is East
http://en.academic.ru/pictures/enwiki/69/East_is_East.jpg
This movie is considered to be an alternative film as it contains notions of alternative ideology. Such as; focus on an ethnic group being muslim. The main protagonists are working class and some of them consist of old people and very young people. Furthermore, homosexuality comes into play as the older brother is a homosexual.

There are also subordinate aspects in the film which mostly consist of a female being included in the main protagonists. This broadens the audience as well as relates back to them.

Plot (copied and pasted from wikipedia)

George is a Pakistani immigrant who has lived in England since 1937 and has been married to Ella, a British woman with an Irish-Catholic background, for 25 years, and has seven children with her: (in age order) Nazir, Abdul, Tariq, Saleem, Maneer, Meenah and Sajid. The couple runs a popular chippy. The film starts with an arranged marriage of the eldest son to an attractive Pakistani girl. The son, Nazir, finds himself unable to go through with the marriage. He runs out at the start of the ceremony in front of all the family and guests much to the chagrin of his father and distress of his mother. The perceived shame that this brings on the family results in George disowning his son, telling people who ask about him that he 'is dead'.
The next crisis to fall on George is the discovery that the youngest son Sajid was accidentally never circumcised which is preferred in Islam. Sajid is promptly taken to hospital to get circumcised. When Ella sees the pain her son has suffered from being circumcised at this age we get the first insight into the conflict between her clear love of her husband and her inability to stand up to him. Left alone, the other children make bacon and sausages, which is also forbidden by the Islamic law not to eat pork. When Meenah sees that her parents are coming back with Sajid she warns the others and they try to hide the evidence. Ella comes into the kitchen and smells it and keeps George away just long enough for them to get rid of everything.
Meanwhile, marriage is still on George's mind, and he accepts an introduction to Mr. Shah, who is looking for good Pakistani bridegrooms for his two comically unattractive daughters. Despite having seen the daughters' photographs, George promises Mr. Shah that his second and third sons, Abdul and Tariq, will marry them. Sajid accidentally overhears George's plans and reveals them to the other brothers when he is pressured by Meenah, Tariq and Saleem.
The arranged marriages infuriate Tariq. He ceremoniously destroys the clothes and watches that his father traditionally buys for all his sons' weddings. When George later sees the desecrated items he attacks and beats the wrong son for refusing to tell him the culprit. Ella stands in between the two. This is the first time she has stood up to him. She tells him that George's pig ignorance has caused the alienation of his children, the reason that they are so much 'trouble' to him. George only hears this as Ella calling him a pig, a terrible insult to a Muslim. His uncontrollable rage turns on her and he beats her badly. In response, the children attempt to flee to their brother, Nazir, in Eccles who, as it turns out, is gay. Nazir drives back to Manchester to sort it out but leaves after his mother begs him to go as his father will go mad. Nazir, desperate not to see his mother hurt only leaves after she begs him saying that she can always come to him if she needs to.
George sees his world around him collapsing and resorts to draconian measures. He is losing the control and respect of his family whom he is trying, with his best intentions, to bring up in an Islamic way, a tradition he sees as the only choice, where all are equal, a 'special community' which he expects his children to continue. They see themselves as British, not Pakistani and they get increasingly frustrated with their father's attempt to mould them in his image.
The final showdown between George and his family occurs during the meeting where both families discuss the arranged marriages. Ella knows she has brought up her children well. The potential parents-in-law make constant subtle attacks on her and her way of life. There is uncomfortable tension in the room between all parties. A comedic plot piece in the story causes grave offence to the potential mother-in-law. She directly insults Ella and her sons calling them 'half breeds'. Ella does not take this abuse and unceremoniously ejects them out from her home. As Mr Shah leaves he says to George "Your wife is a disgrace." George attacks Ella once again for this insult on his dignity and to his name but the children come to the defense of their mother and stop him this time. He becomes a broken man. He has lost his position as man of the house.
Despite this, Ella still sees George as her husband, someone she will remain faithful and loyal to till the end. The film ends on George and Ella having a cup of tea together , a very British form of reconciliation (with George having half a cup, to show his is half british). It is presumed that all members of the family will be fine.
The film gives an insight into the integration of ethnic minority communities into working class Britain in the 1970s with the backdrop of Enoch Powell. It deals with the conflict that British born ethnic minority children have with a parent who is trying to keep his culture and traditions alive.
