Bend it Like Beckham Trailer:
Which trailer conventions are present and what is their effect on the audience?
There are a number of trailer conventions present in the Bend it like Beckham trailer. One of them is that firstly the company which promotes the film, which may be recognisable to the other films the audience may have watched, hence broadening the target audience. Also it shows that the film is coming from a reliable source. Another convention presented in the trailer, is of a narrative/voiceover. The voiceover gives the audience an understanding into the film, and what they are likely to expect from it. The narrative is also quite ambiguous, and his tone being somewhat humours, indicating the film is likely to be somewhat comical, which means audiences who like comedies may be persuaded to watch this. The use of fast, grimy kind of music, helps to gain momentum of the trailer, and latches on to its pace, which adds to the whole relation of the football she’s kicking. The use of shot types also is another convention key in trailer. The use of a long take at the start helps to gain suspense, making the next transition of shots to be sudden, as well as giving the audience an insight into the surroundings/characters. The shots types varied then from a fast cut to a cross cut. The use of cross cutting and fast cutting create a fast tempo, engaging the audience into the trailer. The use of director and maker’s 1 minute in, helps to keep audience engaged, also broaden the audience, as the other films the director made, some of the audience may have liked, therefore would want to watch this film too. The actual title is given right at the end, which helps to keep the audience gripped, and want to find out what the films name is. The teaser trailer at the end adds to its comical value, which leaves audience with a sweet hint of what they are to expect of the film.
How does the trailer use media language (camera, mise-en-scene, editing, sound) to establish the film's genre?
The trailer uses a wide variation of media language such as, camera, mise-en-scene, editing, and sound to establish the films genre. The use of camera movement involves tracking and panning. The use of tracking and panning helps to determine the characters, and give the audience a look at the surroundings which is ideal for gaining an insight into the films genre. The camera angle is shown to be low for the main protagonist, which could indicate her to be feeling insecure or inferior to her mother in the film who is seen in a high angle. This could also signify how the mother is playing a dominant superficial role in the girl’s life. The use of these camera aspects makes the genre of the film to be more likely to be a comedy, as the audience can relate to a mother controlling your life. The mise en scene shows that everything that is in the trailer frame. So in this the costumes at the beginning could connote the film to be an ethnic mix, with Indian and white bases, indicating the genre to be a hybrid. The colourful, (red) ethnic/cultural costumes at the beginning may an indicating that it is likely to be a romantic comedy hybrid, as it does involve a marriage taking placeman the colour red connotes love. The characters are Indian as well, which adds to the ethnicity value of the trailer. The use of lighting is quite high key lighting and bright sunny days, which suggests that the film may also be light and funny, adding to its comical aspect. Sound in the form of dialogue being Diegetic, gains the audience knowledge of narrative, which helps determine the genre. The use of non Diegetic sound, being the music and voiceover creates a notion of fast pace and momentum. Editing achieves a certain quick/medium pace to the trailer, which is conventional for a comedy/romance, in this case the shots are cut shots.
Who is the target audience and how do you know?
The primary target audience is likely to be females, soci economic class D, working /middle class) with the ethnicity being mostly Indian, aged from 14 +, as they will feel pressure from their mothers, and to conform to society, and would want to break free from their norms. This can also be seen as having an empowering for female’s notion of the trailer making it more appealing for females to watch this. The Secondary audience is males ages 14+, who are into football, who would want to see whether girls can play football. In general Indians of all ages are likely to watch this film, with Indians who are working class, could relate to some the issues in this trailer, so are likely to watch the film.
How effective do you think the trailer is in promoting the film? Why?
The trailer has nearly all of the conventions which are need for an audience to be persuaded into watching the film, hence making it quite effective. The main reasons for this are that it contains alternative ideology, with the main protagonist being Indian, meaning that the audience expands, which means the promotions of a film will be recognised more, hereby making the film a success.
